The specialized field of geriatrics was first introduced in Iran in 2008 at Tehran University of Medical Sciences with the aim of improving the quality of life for the elderly and increasing life expectancy. Dr. Fatemeh Sadat Mirzadeh, noting that the elderly should not be seen as one-dimensional, stated that the geriatrics department at Ziaian Hospital consists of both outpatient and inpatient sections. The outpatient section is divided into physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and memory assessment units. The inpatient section, with eleven beds, investigates various causes of diseases. Dr. Seyed Ahmadreza Khatoonabadi, a speech therapist at Ziaian Hospital, said: “One of the approaches that is considered in speech therapy is a social approach, with the aim of enabling communication with others and improving the quality of life of the elderly.
